The community of Silver Creek near Salmon Arm is banding together after the area was thrust into the headlines amid an investigation into human remains.

For weeks, police have searched a rural property in the area and have turned up the remains of Traci Genereaux, an 18-year-old who disappeared from Vernon in May.

Now the normally quiet community, shaken by the news, is organizing social events, aiming to bring people together and help residents feel safe.

The ongoing search gave added meaning to a social event in October that was originally planned as the reopening of the community hall.

“We just encouraged people to get to know each other,” said Colleen Greig, president of the Silver Creek Community Association.

Now a second social, aimed at bringing the rural community together, is set for mid-November.

Organizers hope it will bring a sense of safety after the unsettling news of the past few weeks.

“I think the supper that we are sponsoring is an opportunity for people to get together and get to know one another in a healthy way so that you don’t feel so threatened by people you don’t know,” said Edna Crombie, who is helping to organize the event.

“I think the act of getting together is a comforting thing.”

The dinner is scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Silver Creek Community Hall. Silver Creek residents interested in attending should RSVP by contacting Greig or Crombie.

Charges have yet to be laid in Genereaux’s suspicious death and police continue to investigate the Salmon River Road property.
