Phil Kessel scored 42 seconds into overtime, giving the Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night.

The two teams’ goaltenders stole the show through the first periods. The Oilers’ Cam Talbot and the Penguins’ Matt Murray made several excellent saves to keep it scoreless. Talbot’s best was a pad save on Kessel early in the second period. Murray dove to get his paddle on a Mark Letestu shot during an Oilers power play later in the frame.

“I feel pretty good, I feel confident. I feel back to the way I was to finish the year last year,” Talbot said. “Hopefully I can keep playing well and hopefully we’ll find some goals out front. I know we will.”

Ian Cole opened the scoring when his seeing-eye point shot eluded Talbot 3:24 into the third. Connor McDavid tied it with 2:53 left, beating Murray glove side with a wrist shot. Patrick Maroon and Oscar Klefbom had the assists.

“We just have to relax, calm down a bit,” McDavid said. “We’re getting these chances in front of the net that should be automatic and we’re not scoring them – myself included. Defence is playing great. Forwards have got to be better.”

In overtime, Murray made an early glove save on Leon Draisaitl. Evgeni Malkin sent Kessel in alone, and he snapped a shot past Talbot.
