West End fire Tuesday claims one life, injures two others

One of the three people brought to hospital after a house fire on Simcoe Street died in hospital on Wednesday.

Emergency crews responded to the blaze in the 500 block of Simcoe Street at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Fire officials report three people were in the home when the fire broke out. A man and woman were rushed to hospital in critical condition. Police said Wednesday that the man succumbed to his injuries; the woman was upgraded to stable condition.

A second man was taken to hospital in stable condition and released. All were suffering from smoke inhalation as well as other injuries. A cat in the house at the time of the blaze did not survive.

No information is available as to the cause of the fire or the amount of damage caused, but officials did say the fire started in the one home and quickly spread to a neighbouring house.

Fire and police are investigating.
