The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says the man who was shot by police in west Edmonton on Friday was wanted on 35 outstanding warrants for serious violent offences.
The 37-year-old man was injured after being shot by officers in the area of 171 Street and 83 Avenue on Friday evening.
The standoff started at around 2:30 p.m., when police were called to a break-and-enter in the Thorncliff neighbourhood. Police believed the suspect was still inside the home, possibly with a loaded gun, so officers contained the house, ASIRT said on Monday.
The standoff continued for several hours, but police were not able to get the man to peacefully surrender. At one point, officers believed they heard a gunshot inside the house.
Shortly after 6:20 p.m., the man came out of the house and a confrontation with police occurred. ASIRT said Edmonton police first used an ARWEN system, which fires “less-lethal projectiles” but ultimately, officers fired their weapons.

The man was wounded, but his injuries were not life-threatening. He was taken to hospital where he was treated and released into police custody on Saturday.
Investigators recovered a loaded shotgun outside the house. ASIRT has now taken over the investigation into the conduct of police in the arrest.
The Edmonton Police Service will continue to investigate the actions of the suspect, who ASIRT said was known to police.
No police officers or residents were injured in the incident.
