The department’s website has safety tips for anyone who spots one of the big cats on the trail, which include:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in a tight group. Keep children close.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Leave the area if you see or smell a carcass.
  • Keep your pet on a leash at all times.
  • Carry bear spray. Ensure it is easily accessible and know how to use it.

Albertans are being told to report all sightings of the big cats and carcass locations immediately by calling (403) 591-7755. You can learn more about cougar safety on their website or at WildSmart.
