The annual Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign aims to raise awareness of men’s violence against women by turning London purple.

On Friday morning, officials with the London Abused Women’s Centre (LAWC) will hold a media launch for the 8th annual campaign that will run through the month of November.

Each year officials encourage Londoners to deck out their homes and workplaces in purple to show their support for abused women.

“We will be making an announcement about everything that is new to the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign, as well as introducing the two honourees of this year,” said Fabienne Haller, spokesperson for the LAWC.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The honourees include a survivor of abuse as well as an Indigenous woman who was murdered.

Since beginning seven years ago, the Shine the Light campaign has come a long way.

“One of the great things we will be announcing is the Shine the Light campaign has actually reached the international level, and we will announce who we are working with on the international level, which countries and which groups in those countries,” said Haller.

Haller says even with the campaign’s new successes, the roots of Shine the Light are here in London.

“We are so happy and we’re so appreciative of all the support we get from the London community because we wouldn’t have been able to do this if it wasn’t for London, Ont., stepping up to the plate and being with us from the beginning when we started in 2010. we were able to take the campaign to the international stage with the support of London,” she said.

Friday’s media launch is set for 10:30 a.m.

Wear Purple Day will be on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
