Quebec health minister’s son arrested following hit-and-run

Quebec’s Health Minister Gaétan Barrette has confirmed that his son Geoffroy Barrette was arrested Friday morning.

The arrest comes after a 27-year-old cyclist suffered severe head injuries after being hit by a vehicle around 12:15 a.m. Friday in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal borough.

According to Montreal police spokesperson Daniel Lacoursière, Barrette could face charges of hit and run causing bodily harm and reckless driving causing bodily harm.

“After his discussion with police officers he was let go on a promise to appear,” Lacoursière said.

The incident happened at the intersection of Rachel Street East and Saint-Dominique Street.

The driver fled the scene and police found the vehicle on des Carrières Street near the intersection of Saint-Hubert Street.

Barrette expressed shock after learning of his son’s arrest.

“I am shocked and my first thoughts were immediately for the victim,” Barrette said in a release. “My son, who I will support like every parent, will now have to answer to his actions.”

The cyclist’s life is not in danger.
