Kayla Grasely decided over the long weekend that she wanted to provide a Thanksgiving meal to a Saskatoon family in need.

She took to social media on Oct. 8 to find the recipients of her act of kindness.

The meal cost roughly $70 and included everything from two whole chickens to pumpkin pie.

Grasely’s Facebook post on the group Saskatoon Buy and Sell quickly got over 500 comments.

She said the online reaction was eye-opening.

“As soon as the post [went up], there was nothing but comments after comments and I was like, ‘I’d better start writing these down,’” Grasely said with a smile on Monday.

Given the many responses, the recipients were ultimately selected through a draw.

Grasely said the donated meal was delivered to a family of seven.

“Very deserving — they’re a family of five kids and they actually do go hungry because they will make sure their kids eat before they touch food. For a family to put the kids’ needs ahead of their own – which sometimes doesn’t happen – is amazing to see,” Grasely said.

Christine Angst said they are very thankful for the gift.

“When we woke up yesterday, we couldn’t afford and wouldn’t be celebrating. But thanks to my good friend Ashley and sister-in-law Jen’s nomination and Kayla’s big heart, we are able to celebrate this year,” Angst said.

“Times are tough these days and many besides us are feeling the pinch. Lack of work, the high price of food and living makes it hard to get by,” she added.

“I’m feeling blessed by this. I hope this inspires others to make other families’ hopes come true during the holidays. I also hope that when our life gets more stable, we too can pay it forward in the future.”

Grasely plans on continuing to donate and hopes her act inspires others to give back to the community.

“There’s a hundred ways to donate, and there’s hundreds of people in our city alone that need it,” she said.

The Facebook post has since been deleted as entries continued to flood in after the family was already selected.
