Staff and volunteers have been busy all morning setting up chairs and tables.

Prepping and cooking the food has been going on for the last few days.

About 130 turkeys have been cooked in preparation for the feast — that’s 2,200 pounds.

About 800 pounds of mashed potatoes have been prepared, 600 pies and 280 litres of gravy.

“We’re going to make sure that people who feel like they don’t have something to celebrate on Thanksgiving have something to be thankful for,” said Jeremy Hunka, spokesperson for the Union Gospel Mission.

“More people are homeless now in Metro Vancouver than ever before and a lot of them need community around them to help and change their circumstances. Once they realize that, and they care, they’ll connect, and hopefully, you know, it will help them get into housing and alcohol and drug recovery programs.”
