Jayden Trueman has something very close to her heart to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend. On Saturday, the Children’s Wish Foundation granted the 12-year-old’s most heartfelt wish of having her very own horse.

“Jayden lives in Upper Stewiacke, so being out in the country is very much a part of her life and she’s always loved horses,” said Cheryl Matthews, the director of the Children’s Wish Foundation in Nova Scotia.

“She just wants a best friend and that’s going to be Bow.”

Jayden has been working with Bow, a 13-year-old horse, for the past year at a local stable. She was told that Bow was going to a new home — but unaware that home would be hers.

Jayden was tricked into thinking she was attending a birthday party for her uncle on Saturday morning, where she was surprised by Bow.

When she laid eyes on the horse, Jayden was overcome with emotion.

“He’s great,” Jayden said of Bow.”I love him so much.”

Jayden says she has always liked horses and first started riding them eight years ago.

Although she has tried riding a few horses, Bow became her favourite.

“They were always just so beautiful,” Jayden said of horses. “I just fell in love with them.”

Jayden’s mother, Jackie Snow, says when her daughter is with Bow, the pair are in another world.

“She’s been into horses for years and years and she’s been nagging for a horse,” said Snow.

John Trueman, Jayden’s father, said the gift from the Children’s Wish Foundation means a lot to his family.

“We couldn’t have done this ourselves for many years,” said Trueman.

Jayden was diagnosed with polyarticular juvenile arthritis when she was only four years old.

“She was diagnosed April 1 of 2009, and she had swollen knees and wrists — [it] is what made us take her to the doctor,” said Snow.

She says Jayden is doing well now that her condition is under control.

For Jayden’s wish, the foundation partnered with RBC. In addition to receiving Bow, Jayden was also gifted with money for food and veterinarian costs for the horse, as well as new riding equipment.

Nationally, Children’s Wish is celebrating a milestone — granting their 25,000th wish.

“Every time you sit down to eat a meal, Children’s Wish is granting a wish across this country, so 3.5 wishes a day are being granted with Children’s Wish,” said Matthews.

“In Nova Scotia alone, we have a little over 100 wishes that we’re working on right now.”
