Fire destroys camper van, tents at Surrey homeless camp

A fire broke out at a Surrey homeless camp shortly after noon on Wednesday, destroying at least one camper van and nearby debris.

Crews were called to the camp at the end of Old Yale Road near the Pattullo Bridge around 12:45 p.m.

The fire was extinguished, but not before a camper and other items nearby were destroyed.

Assistant Surrey Fire chief Brian Woznikoski said this is the second time firefighters have been called to the area in the last couple of days.

“The good part was that the fire was extinguished quickly, so very minimal environmental problems with that.”

Another camper was destroyed in the first fire.

Woznikowski said no one was hurt and crews have cleared the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
