Alberta’s police watchdog is asking anyone who may have video or photographs of the events that led to a police shooting at a 7-Eleven last week to come forward.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the shooting, which happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Sept. 29,  in the 4600 block of 37 Street S.W.

Calgary police said Tuesday they’ve charged one man in relation to events leading to the shooting.

Tristen Joseph Wade, 23, is facing a string of charges including one count each of arson endangering life, possession of a weapon, assault with a weapon, theft under $5,000, breach of recognizance and two counts of assault of a police officer with a weapon.

Officers were called for reports of a man “acting erratically” and in possession of “what was believed to be a steak knife.” Police said staff and others inside the store called 911 believing they were in danger.

When officers arrived, the man, still holding the knife, walked into a Canada Post storage room inside the store. Officers couldn’t get him to drop the knife and eventually noticed smoke coming from the storage room.

ASIRT said one of the officers used a conducted energy weapon on the man but failed to disarm him. That’s when an officer fired his service weapon at the suspect.

“Wounded, the man fell to the ground but began stabbing and cutting himself with the knife, causing injuries,” ASIRT said in a statement on Tuesday.

They said officers used a Taser on the man for the second time and sent in a police dog.

“Upon making contact with the man, he was pulled away from the storage room,” the statement from ASIRT read. “Officers were then able to remove the knife and handcuff him.”

The Calgary Fire Department was called to put out the fire in the storage room.

ASIRT said the man was treated for injuries including self-inflicted knife wounds and smoke inhalation. He is still in hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

ASIRT said the officers who fired the conducted energy weapons are not included in the investigation as that did not appear to injure the victim.

They said no further information will be released at this time.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call ASIRT at (403) 592-4306.
