Carla Unser of Moose Jaw was at the Route 91 Harvest Festival with her husband Jae and their friend, where almost 60 have been confirmed dead and more than 500 injured after a mass shooting.
“It sounded almost like fireworks,” Carla said.
“Then we realized it was a machine gun.”
The Unsers and their friend were about 10 rows back from the stage.
“There (were) people all around us getting shot. You could hear it and see it. My husband just laid on top of us… It was so scary.”
“I’m a fireman. I’ve seen dead people before and I’ve been to bad accidents, but this is something completely different,” Jae said.
At first, the trio got down on the ground to try and avoid the bullets. After the area had cleared slightly, they ran. They hid behind a semi-truck onsite for a few minutes where someone was helping a woman who had been shot.
They then escaped to the hotel they were staying at across the street.
“We were running and my mouth was so dry, I couldn’t even swallow,” Carla said.

“The only thing going through my head was getting my wife (and friend) to safety. We had to find somewhere where we were out of the line of fire,” Jae said.
Carla said they immediately called their family as soon as they got to their room. They haven’t left the hotel since they made it safely back, and she says she wishes they could go home today, but their flight doesn’t leave until Wednesday.
“We didn’t sleep at all last night. We’re just out of sorts and scared… We just have to tough it out, I guess,” Carla said.
“You see stuff on the news, but when you’re actually there, it is a million times scarier – it’s unbelievable.”
“We must have had some angels looking over us because it was way too close.”
