Port Hope police say before the noon hour, a 75-year-old man was walking in the area of Queen and Walton streets at the same time a woman was walking two dogs.

Police say one of the dogs — a Dogo Argentino (also known as an Argentine Mastiff) — suddenly pulled away from the woman and attacked the man.

The man was taken to Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg for bite wounds. The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics for scrapes she sustained trying to restrain the dog. The Argentine Mastiff usually has a large, white short coat with a muscular body.

Police say both dogs have been quarantined by municipal animal services.
