The lawyer for a West Vancouver man accused of excessive speeding on the Lions Gate Bridge earlier this summer is challenging the charges.
Yihao Wang, 22, was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act in early July after being stopped for speeding.
Officers say they clocked Wang doing 210 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. They impounded his Ferrari for 60 days and he was banned from driving for 16 months.
“It’s sentence first, verdict afterwards, that’s what occurred so far, kind of Alice in Wonderland,” said Wang’s lawyer David Baker. “The police utilized a section of the Motor Vehicle Act, which allows them to obtain a driving prohibition prior to a charge even being laid. The charge was only approved on Aug. 18, six weeks after the event.”
However, West Vancouver police say Wang had previously been handed two tickets for excessive speeding with one from as recently as April.
He also received a ticket in February for using an electronic device and in March 2016, he received a speeding ticket.
Wang was supposed to make his first court appearance today but instead, he was a no-show with his lawyer appearing on his behalf.
In 2013, Wang also received two separate tickets for failing to produce his driver’s license.
