Residents of illegal suites in Surrey’s East Clayton area may soon have to look for new homes.

The city of Surrey sent out 175 letters demanding that homeowners operating illegal suites, stop and comply with city regulations within six months.

Surrey’s manager of Public Safety Operation, Jas Rehal says illegal suites contribute to a growing parking problem in the area and the city is acting on numerous complaints.

Rehal says, “our engineering department did a lot of initiatives looking at options and ways to alleviate the pressure but unfortunately even with all of those initiatives the issues haven’t gone away so and are still impacting the neighborhood and so at this time the only way to alleviate the pressure facing that community is to take enforcement action.”

A suite is considered illegal in the East Clayton area if parts of the main dwelling are being rented out.
