Crews contain Stony Plain natural gas leak

A natural gas leak in Stony Plain was contained late Thursday night after a line was struck in the community west of Edmonton earlier in the evening.

At around 6:30 p.m., a gas line was struck in the laneway north of 51 Avenue and east of 50 Street.

Businesses in a one-block radius of the leak were evacuated.

Members of the Stony Plain Fire Department were called to the scene as a precaution as ATCO Gas crews worked to fix the line.

At around 9:30 p.m., RCMP said crews had stopped the gas leak. Crews were expected to remain on scene into the night to conduct further repairs.

The Town of Stony Plain said ATCO isolated the line break to a single business. Gas service is expected to be restored by Friday morning.

No injuries were reported.

Stony Plain is located about 40 kilometres west of Edmonton.
