Peterborough updates exotic pet bylaws

Peterborough updates reptile pet rules – Sep 6, 2017

Peterborough city council has approved a bylaw banning large pet reptile species, like anacondas and Burmese pythons.

Any type of snake longer than 3 meters is not allowed as a pet.

The city has also lifted an old rule that allowed a limit of 3 exotic pets of the same species.

Gord Perry, co-owner of House of Scales, says he’s happy with the changes. However, he says there is still plenty of public awareness and education that needs to be done.

Some animals such as ferrets and pot-bellied pigs are now permitted. They were previously on a list of banned animals.
