With Bill Cosby’s sexual assault retrial looming, it remains a struggle for some in the comedy community to separate the beloved comedian whose standup routines made millions laugh from the alleged serial rapist accused of assaulting more than 60 women.

Drawing that distinction, however, is not difficult for Jerry Seinfeld, who discussed Cosby on a recent edition of Canadian comic Norm Macdonald’s YouTube talk show, Norm Macdonald Live.

“I think Bill Cosby’s the biggest comedian of all time,” Seinfeld told Macdonald during a discussion of their comedy influences. “I don’t think anyone will ever match his production and quality of material.”

Acknowledging that “I love Bill Cosby,” Macdonald revealed he was a huge fan of Cosby’s comedy albums while growing up.

“I used to have maybe the greatest Bill Cosby story ever, and now it’s not in the top 10,000,” Macdonald said. “Because I’ll tell the story, and now I’ll constantly be interrupted by, ‘Did he rape you?’ He didn’t rape me, it had nothing to do with the story.”

This led Seinfeld to ask: “How much are you bothered by this comedian you really thought was great turns out to be this person doing horrible things? Do you separate his work from the person? Does it taint it at all?”

“Not at all,” Macdonald joked.
