The City of Regina will be introducing Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons to try and improve pedestrian safety.
This month, the city will begin a pilot program to evaluate how effective pedestrian activated LED solar power flashing beacons will be for safety. The lights will be used as a warning device to bring drivers attention to the pedestrians.
The city will be installing the flashing beacons at the following intersections:
- 13th Avenue and Scarth Street
- Victoria Avenue and McIntyre Street
- Saskatchewan Drive and Smith Street
Pedestrian protection in Regina has included side-mounted crosswalks, overhead crosswalks, pedestrian corridors and pedestrian half signals. However, some high-pedestrian intersections can’t use these types of crossings due to impediments.
City crews will finish installing the flashing beacons by the end of August. The pilot project will wrap up in 2018.
