Hamilton Councillor Matthew Green expresses concern over militarized security on city property

In the wake of the deadly violence in Charlottesville, Va., Hamilton Councillor Matthew Green is calling for a ban on outside groups providing security on city property.

Just a few weeks ago, security was provided at a rally in the City Hall forecourt by a group called the Canadian Three Percenters.

“(They) are linked with a heavily armed militia that’s forming right now in Alberta and are importing what you would see down in the States, with an armed, heavily armed, extreme, far-right, white supremacist agenda,” said Green.

He cautions that the violence witnessed in the United States could happen in Canada.

“Let us be extremely clear about the imminent, present danger to people of colour, to Muslims, to Indigenous Peoples here, to our black communities and others, that are under threat.”

City staff have been asked to report back on the policy regarding security on public property.

Green says he believes the task should remain in the hands of the Hamilton Police.
