TORONTO – Ontario’s police watchdog says it won’t lay charges against a Niagara regional police officer involved in the arrest of a teenager who suffered a concussion.
The Special Investigations Unit says the officer arrested a 16-year-old boy for allegedly being drunk and trespassing inside a St. Catharines mall.
The SIU says the boy threw his shoulder against a sign on a wall as the officer escorted him to the mall’s security office and may have hit his head.
The agency says that two days later, the boy went to hospital and was diagnosed with a concussion.
The SIU’s director says he believes the force used by the officer was within the limits of the law.
The Special Investigations Unit is an arms-length civilian agency that looks into allegations of serious injury, death, or sexual assault involving Ontario police officers.
