9-year-old girl killed, 3 others injured in crash on Highway 1 near Medicine Hat

A nine-year-old girl was killed in a crash between a Pontiac Sunfire and a semi-trailer near Medicine Hat, Alta. on Monday.

The collision happened at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 41 just before 3 p.m.

In total, five people were involved in the collision; four travelling in the Sunfire and one in the semi-trailer.

The young victim was a passenger in the Sunfire. It’s unknown if she died at the scene of the crash or after being taken to hospital.

The woman driving the Sunfire was taken to hospital in Medicine Hat suffering from serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. Police later said her condition had been upgraded to “serious but stable.”

The two other occupants in the Sunfire — 12-year-old twin girls — were initially reported to be in critical condition. Late Monday evening RCMP issued an update saying one had been upgraded to stable condition.

RCMP confirm the family is from Chestermere, Alta.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

The collision caused westbound traffic on Highway 1 to be diverted for several hours.
