Habitat for Humanity set to snap up land in Kingston — for $1

It’s not often a municipality just gives land away — but that’s essentially what the city of Kingston, Ont., wants to do.

On Tuesday, city staff are recommending council to vote in favour of selling a 0.2-acre of land on Gore Road for only $1 – to Habitat for Humanity.

“In this case, I think it’s a great potential partnership with Habitat for Humanity to be able to come in and construct a few homes,” Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson said.

The deal is contingent on the organization building affordable housing units.

“That would fit into the neighbourhood — that would achieve our bigger goals of increasing the supply of affordable housing and also distributing it throughout the city,” Paterson said.
