Toronto police say the “technical difficulties” they were facing with their 911 emergency dispatch service Friday have been resolved.

Police said 911 calls were still being dispatched throughout the day, but callers were being asked to contact their local division for non-emergency calls.

Const. Victor Kwong said police do not know why the problem arose, but said it was due to infrastructure issues with Bell and other third party companies.

Emergency calls were still being answered through 911 as usual, but police warned there could be longer wait times.

Kwong said the dispatch system has “multiple redundancies” to prepare for everything from minor issues to “catastrophic failure” and said half of the system had gone down Friday.

“So instead of switching everything to a backup we decided, ok we’ll keep 911 going and all the non-emergency [calls] we’re just going to have that going over to the divisions,” he said, adding that Toronto Fire and paramedics were assisting with calls.

“We all work together so no one would ever noticed a difference … [but] they would have noticed a longer wait time with 911.”

Police said on Twitter the issue was resolved just after 4 p.m. Friday.
