Environment Canada confirmed Thursday afternoon that a tornado did in fact occur just north of London on Wednesday evening.
Engineers from Western University surveyed the damage in the Lucan area on Thursday and concluded that at roughly 7 o’clock Wednesday evening, an EF0 tornado with peak winds of 130km/h resulted in 5 km of damage as wide as 170 metres.
The same storm cell responsible for the Lucan tornado is responsible for reports of a tornado in the Drumbo area but as of Thursday afternoon, Environment Canada was still investigating whether or not a tornado occurred.
Heather Cunningham is the owner of Big Al’s Storage in Lucan and said damage is extensive but her and her husband are waiting for insurance company assessments.
“We found a snowmobile trailer that was parked in our yard is now in the township’s yard in front of their fence in a few pieces,” she told AM980.
“We have a tent trailer that was turned over upside down onto its roof and we had, it looked like about a 25 foot camping trailer onto its side. A couple snowmobile trailers moved across the yard.”
Cunningham added that her neighbour actually witnessed the action.
“He was in the shed so he actually got a better witness to it than most people. He said he thought it was a truck roaring… he couldn’t believe the sounds it was making.”
The tornado Wednesday night is the third in Ontario this year.
