Beginning September 1, smoking and the use of tobacco products will not be allowed in any building owned or leased by the University, any University vehicle, on any property leased or owned by the University, or in any car parked anywhere on University property.
The sale and advertisement of tobacco products is also banned.
“We know that exposure to second-hand smoke and the use of tobacco products is a major health hazard. We want to reduce and eventually eliminate this health risk on our campus. This change is aligned with our values of accountability and well-being, and with our emphasis on sustainability,” said Dave Button, Vice-President (Administration) in a release Wednesday.
As of Sept. 1, smoking will only be permitted in three designated smoking areas on campus.
“Many students live on campus, and the designated smoking areas will provide them with a safe outdoor smoking space,” said Button.
The University will continue to allow the use of tobacco for ceremony, in accordance with its policy on smudging and pipe ceremonies.
