Police say a 33-year-old Uber driver from Toronto has been charged in the alleged sexual assault of a minor.
Halton Regional Police said they made an arrest on Monday after investigating a report of a sexual assault in June.
The victim, who police said was a young female, had been riding with Uber in Oakville. She was alone with the driver at the time of the incident.
A spokeswoman for the popular ride-sharing service said the suspect is no longer driving for Uber.
“What’s been reported is not tolerated and has no place on the Uber app,” she said in an emailed statement.
“We have permanently removed this driver’s access to Uber and will provide any information to law enforcement that would be helpful for their active investigation.”
Det. Maureen Martin, of the Halton police sexual assault unit, said police have no indications that there may be other victims.
She encouraged the public to contact police if they feel their safety is at risk.
“We would suggest that they let people know that they’re taking an Uber and maybe when they arrive at their destination for personal safety reasons,” she said.
Ansar Ali, 33, has been charged with one count of sexual assault and breach of probation.
