WINNIPEG – A new Winnipeg Transit station designed to reduce congestion at Blue Bombers game will be open in time for the team’s home opener this Friday.

The team is so confident it will improve getting in and out of Investors Group Field, they’re offering a guarantee ahead of the game.

“If you don’t get off campus quicker than you have in the past then we’ll give you two tickets to the Toronto Argonauts game the next week,” said Wade Miller, Blue Bombers President and CEO.

Stadium Station is part of the second phase of the southwest corridor of Winnipeg’s rapid transit system.

It’s adjacent to the south side of Investors Group Field and will be the location where fans using Transit will now be dropped off and picked up.

“After a Bomber game or concert you’ve got kind of everybody going off into one direction, this will split it, and we’ll get public transportation over here,” said Mayor Brian Bowman at the official opening of the station on Tuesday.

However, for the next couple of years the station will only be used for Bombers’ games and large events of 15,000 people or more.

It will only operate everyday once the entire southwest corridor is open and that’s not expected to happen until 2020.

It wouldn’t make sense to redirect current routes to use the new station until the entire rapid transit leg is functional, said a city representative.
