Harrison Hot Springs wildfire prompts notice-to-leave order

A notice-to-leave order has been issued for the area near a wildfire burning 30 kilometres north of Harrison Hot Springs.

The BC Wildfire Service issued the order Sunday afternoon in an effort to clear the area to help fire suppression resources have better access to the fire site. It was also issued to prevent the public from driving to the site.

The affected areas are:

• Harrison East Forest Service Road from the 20-kilometre mark.
• North to the Junction of the Harrison East Forest Service Road and Shovel Creek Forest Service Road.
• All official and non-official recreation sites.
• All tributary roads within the defined area.

The order does not include primary residences or established commercial or industrial facilities.

More than 60 firefighters are already fighting the fire as well as six helicopters, a water tender and an airtanker.

The fire is about 60 hectares in size, and is considered just five per cent contained.

Fire Information Officer Marg Drysdale said the blaze burning near the mouth of Big Silver Creek is human-caused.

People are being asked to stay off the waters near the fire.
