Coates will portray daredevil Johnny (Rooster) Byron, a role previously played on the London stage by Oscar winner Mark Rylance.

“Jerusalem” will mark Coates’s return to the stage after a quarter-century spent mainly focused on film and TV work.

Coates launched his career in the theatre and has more than 50 plays to his credit, including the title role in “Macbeth” at the Stratford Festival, and as Stanley Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire” on Broadway.

Earlier this month, he received an honorary doctor of letters degree from the University of Saskatchewan.
