‘It sounded like an automatic weapon’: residents react to North York fatal shooting

Residents are in shock after a fatal shooting took place in their community in North York early Sunday.

Toronto police said officers responded to a call around 2:30 a.m. about shots fired in the Finch and Islington avenues area.

Emergency services arrived on scene and found a man in the driver’s seat of a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victim, identified as 20-year-old Soumik Asgar, was pronounced dead on scene.

Residents in the area told Global News they were shocked to awaken to the sound of gunshots on their street.

“It just sounded like a popping, like how a firework would sound,” said Tilli Ishak. “It’s pretty worrying because I know a lot of people who live here.

“It’s just a scary thought that someone died last night.”

“It sounded like an automatic weapon,” said Angelo Travanut, who has been living on Blue Haven for more than 30 years.

Investigators said they are no longer looking for the passenger originally believed to have been in the victim’s car at the time of the shooting.

There is no word on suspects at this time.
