A 13-year-old boy died of injuries he sustained after he was struck by a van in St. Albert Thursday afternoon.
Police were called to the area of Gresham Blvd. and Grenfell Avenue shortly after 3 p.m.
RCMP said a collision occurred between a youth on a bike and an Econoline Van.
The boy was taken to hospital in Edmonton with serious injuries where he later died.
Robert Meinke was mowing his lawn when he heard a loud noise. He called 911 and went to the scene to check on the cyclist and wait for emergency crews to arrive.
“I stood back and made sure I wasn’t interfering with anybody,” he said. “Seeing something like that, it’s terrifying and you think about your own children.”

No other injuries were reported.
The van at the scene was marked with a Kids Paradise Daycare logo. The owner of the daycare said an employee was driving the van.
“I am really stressed out (by) what happened and really sorry for the family,” Satinder Sidhu said. “I’m a mom too.
“I’m really, really sorry for what happened.”
St. Albert mayor Nolan Crouse issued a statement Thursday night, passing along his condolences to the family and friends of the teen.
“Today’s terrible loss reminds us of how precious life is, and how we must do everything we can to help create a community that is safe and secure for all,” he said.
“I encourage residents to join me in doing all we can to help support the family during this very difficult time.”
Crouse said he has asked the city manager to conduct a complete review of the incident to prevent a similar tragedy from happening again on St. Albert streets.
RCMP would not say whether or not charges were pending.
