Dufferin Street branded Toronto’s worst road for 2017

Dufferin Street is Toronto’s worst road for 2016 according to the latest ranking by CAA South Central Ontario.

The stretch of road jumped to the number one spot after dethroning Bayview Avenue from a year ago.

“While much of the road has been repaired, the work is ongoing,” Raymond Chan, government relations specialist, CAA South Central Ontario said during a press conference Thursday morning in Toronto.

“And the fact that Dufferin continues to appear on our list, reflects the challenges road users face as the infrastructure is repaired.”

The online campaign, which asked the public to vote for the roads most in need of repair and redesign, had over 3,000 roads nominated across the province.

“With Bayview Avenue having appeared on the list for so many years, the city really recognized that and decided to pump more money and accelerate the reconstruction work,” Chan said.

Ontario’s worst road is Burlington Street East in Hamilton which jumped five spots from last year.

Chan said 85 per cent of roads nominated were selected for potholes or crumbling pavement and a further 10 per cent said congestion was their top concern.

“Once again this year, we see evidence that regular maintenance required to extend road life, in many cases isn’t being done,” Geoff Wilkinson, chief operating officer, Ontario Road Builders’ Association, said. “In other instances, roads are simply at the end of their life-cycle.

  4. Maley Drive, Sudbury
  5. Queenston Street, St. Catharines

  7. Hunt Club Road, Ottawa
  8. TIE – Carling Avenue, Ottawa) AND Duckworth Street, Barrie
  9. TIE – Algonquin Boulevard East, Timmins AND Yonge Street, Toronto
  10. County Road 49, Prince Edward County
