The owner of the two-hectare farm on Longwoods Road has proposed building a livestock facility with a halal abattoir.

A public participation meeting was held last week with strong support from the Muslim community, however, neighbours in the area shared concerns regarding odours from the farm.

“We have agricultural land that is very very valuable and we have that urban development clashing as well, and getting back to our policies, to me, this is a reasonable recommendation coming forward,” said Coun. Anna Hopkins, who represents the ward.

Coun. Jesse Helmer expressed concerns about the rezoning as it would impact land use if the property ever changed hands.

“I understand the desire to have the regulations that apply to an abattoir in force when keeping the livestock is allowed, but I don’t know that there’s so much overlap between those two [the farm and the abattoir],” he said.

He also wants to see issues surrounding potential odour to be addressed.

“I think frankly getting a nutrient management strategy in place for the property to deal with the livestock and the issues caused by the manure is probably more important than what happens in terms of the actual regulations of the abattoir.”

The request was sent back to staff, asking that the strict regulations for an abattoir to be met before approving any changes.
