1 officer and 2 paramedics injured in altercation after crash on Deerfoot: police

Two paramedics and one police officer were rushed to hospital Monday afternoon after an incident that occurred following a multi-vehicle crash on Deerfoot Trail.

In a Monday news release, police said emergency crews were first called to a crash along northbound Deerfoot Trail between 17 Avenue and Memorial Drive South at around 4 p.m.

“At least four cars were involved in the initial collision and when first responders arrived they were confronted by a combative man who had been involved in the crash.”

Police said multiple members from EMS, the Calgary Police Service (CPS) and the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) tried to restrain the combative man, but were unsuccessful.

According to the release, police attempted to use a conducted energy weapon on the man, but it had little effect.

“It is not known why the patient was combative. He was transported to hospital after being sedated.”

According to police, one paramedic was taken to hospital in serious, non-life-threatening condition.

Police said a second paramedic and a member of the CPS received minor injuries.

Two members of the public who were in the collision were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A police escort led one of the ambulances from the scene.

Northbound Deerfoot Trail was shut down for nearly two hours after the crash, with delays of up to 70 minutes reported by some commuters. Southbound Deerfoot Trail also experienced some delays.
