Kousoulis won a second term with 41.3 per cent of the vote.

The riding was one to watch as name recognition had influence in the race. Public Service Commission Minister and Internal Services Minister Kousoulis was running against well-known Progressive Conservative candidate Rob Batherson, who is a longtime Tory and worked for former premier John Hamm.

Kousoulis was elected in 2013 with 47.66 per cent of the vote, defeating NDP incumbent Leonard Preyra. Prior to Kousoulis, Preyra was MLA for the riding since 2006 and served as communities, culture and heritage minister from 2012-13.  Before Preyra’s election, the riding has gone to all three major parties but the longest hold was by the PCs from 1978 until 1997. The riding was also held by former Liberal leader Danny Graham.

The riding was created in 1967 and covers the southern half of the Halifax peninsula, including the downtown core, Citadel Hill and Point Pleasant Park, as well as Sable Island.
