New Brunswick RCMP are asking for the public’s help after a brass plaque was stolen from a monument at the Madawaska Airport in Saint-Jacques.
It is part of a display of the Lancaster KB882 aircraft, one of the last surviving bombers of its kind.
The plane was built in 1942, flying several combat missions over Europe during the Second World War. According to the National Air Force Museum of Canada, the plane helped map and chart Canada’s Arctic as well as perform electronic and photographic intelligence gathering during the Cold War.
During the Cuban Missile Crisis the Lancaster KB882 also helped monitor and photograph Russian boats in the Atlantic Ocean.
The plane was installed at the airport in 1964 after it was retired from service.

The plaque is blue, measures three feet by three feet and has raised lettering. It was reported missing on May 16, 2017.
