Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue (RMSAR) members and the Maple Ridge Fire Department were called to Golden Ears Park late Sunday afternoon for a swiftwater rescue.
Police say crews were called around 4:20 p.m. after receiving reports a man was swept away by rushing water near the popular Lower Falls hiking trail.
BC Ambulance was also called to the scene.
“This is a very tragic event,” said Insp. Jennifer Hyland.

On Monday, Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue said swiftwater teams searched the river from the Falls to Alouette Lake. Helicopters also flew the length of Gold Creek looking for the missing man.
No one was located, and as darkness fell, teams were pulled from the field.
In the morning, crews went back to the area to assess water conditions, but it was determined that until the water levels dropped significantly, it would be unsafe to risk searchers entering the water.
RCMP and RMSAR will monitor the water levels and make a determination when it will be safe to continue the search.
