Skier in serious condition after avalanche on Cypress Mountain

It’s proving to be a dangerous and deadly weekend for skiers and snowboarders on the South Coast. Two separate avalanches were triggered today. As Jill Bennett reports, one search has ended on a sad note – Mar 4, 2017

The skier trapped in an avalanche in Cypress Provincial Park on Saturday is “lucky to be alive,” according to rescuers.

North Shore Rescue responded to a “Code Alpha” avalanche rescue in the backcountry’s Tony Baker Gully area at about 1:30 p.m.

The avalanche victim was reached by air and dug out by 2:30 p.m.

One of the men was dragged down 400 feet through trees, off a cliff and buried under two metres of snow, North Shore Rescue said.

The men were prepared with avalanche gear and the other skier was able to find his friend and begin to dig him out.

The skier was transported to hospital in serious condition.
