Stone Rapids RCMP said a man they were chasing in northern Saskatchewan disappeared underwater and is believed to have drowned.

At around 5:15 a.m. CT on Saturday, Mounties were called to a complaint at a home in the community.

When officers arrived, a man attempted to evade them on foot.

Police officials said the man subsequently ended up in a body of water and disappeared beneath the surface.

Efforts to locate him have been unsuccessful.

Recovery efforts are still ongoing.

Saskatchewan RCMP officials have requested an independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which will be carried out the Prince Albert Police Service.

Additionally, the Ministry of Justice has been asked to appoint an independent observer.
