Deceased identified in fatal crash on westbound 401

Provincial police have identified the victim of a fatal collision early Thursday on the westbound 401 west of London.

The collision occurred just after 12:30 a.m. when an eastbound tractor-trailer crossed the median, rolled, and hit a westbound big rig east of Union Road, police said.

Emergency crews including Elgin OPP, Southwold F.D., Elgin-St. Thomas EMS, and Oneida EMS responded to the collision.

According to investigators, the male driver and lone occupant of the westbound truck died in the crash. In an update Thursday afternoon, police identified the deceased as Gary Lent, 66, of Etobicoke.

Paramedics rushed the male driver and lone occupant of the eastbound truck to hospital with serious injuries. In their update, police said the man was listed in good condition.

The crash remains under investigation, and police have reopened all lanes of the westbound 401 at Union Road.
