Police say they have arrested a 21-year-old Toronto man wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant in connection with the fatal stabbing of his aunt.

Toronto police responded to a report of a stabbing at a home near College and Dufferin Streets around 8 p.m. Friday.

Police said Sarah Vermelhudo, 38, of Toronto, and her 59-year-old mother were found with serious stab wounds and rushed to hospital. Vermelhudo succumbed to her injuries in hospital and was later pronounced dead.

“A short time after attending, there were the sounds of struggle from upstairs in her bedroom and then some screams.” Toronto Police Det.-Sgt. Graham Gibson told Global News Saturday.

“She came down and she was observed to be suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds.”

Shayne MacDonald was wanted on a countrywide warrant for second-degree murder and attempted murder Saturday and police said he was considered “violent, armed and dangerous.”

Police said Vermelhudo’s mother is expected to make a full recovery but could not comment on a motive for the attack.

A police source told Global News Monday the suspect was arrested at a bus stop in Toronto after he was recognized by a member of the public.

He was then taken into custody at 14 Division and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.
