Residents of Dundurn, Sask., and the surrounding area are donating food, clothes and other items to four people who lost the majority of their possessions in a house fire on Wednesday.
Chance MacDonald, 22, said he was woken up by his brother at roughly two in the morning after a fire broke out in the home they were renting.
“I think we were really lucky,” MacDonald said in an interview at the site of the home.
“If my brother wouldn’t have woken up I don’t know if we would have all made it out.”
MacDonald and his brother lived with two other people. None of the residents sustained injures, however MacDonald said their personal belongings were destroyed.
“I just had my pajama pants and that was it,” MacDonald said.
“Didn’t grab my shoes or nothing, just ran out.”
Once the firefighting effort ended, Colleen Troesch said she sprung into action herself, by putting out a call for donations on social media.
“Just a quick, you know we’ve had a fire, we need to come together,” Troesch said about her Facebook post.
A number of other groups have since taken up the call and are collecting items.
Troesch said it proves the community is “compassionate and caring.”
“There’s been a lot of good people in the community that have come through for us,” MacDonald said.
“I am very thankful for everything that everyone’s done for us so far.”
