You won’t believe who beat Drake and Beyoncé for #1 album of the year

ET Canada / Keystone Press

Drake had a record-breaking year with his album Views, but one unexpected artist from the 1700s had the best-selling CD of 2016. Famed classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart beat the rapper, with the biggest selling physical CD this year according to Billboard.

Mozart has been long dead for more than two centuries, but he has topped the charts again with over 1.25 million copies sold so far. There’s one catch though, the sales for the album – Mozart 225, a massive 200 CD box set that contains every note of the famed composer’s music – were tallied and Billboard counts each CD in the box set as an individual sale.

Mozart 225 was released more than a month ago to mark the 225th anniversary of Mozart’s death, selling for $500.

And while Drake, Beyoncé and Adele may have sold more total units, Mozart pushed more discs this year.

Views was one of the biggest albums of the year and the album’s lead single, One Dance, was just as massive, earning the title of Spotify’s most streamed song ever. Beyoncé had another outstanding year with her surprise album Lemonade and Adele’s 2015 album, 25, continued into 2016 with massive sales.

Some Twitter users had fun with the Mozart score, creating memes to celebrate the victory.
