EDMONTON – Industrial product distributor Acklands-Grainger Inc. is being fined $500,000 after pleading guilty to breaking environmental protection laws.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says the company admitted in Alberta provincial court Monday to violating laws against the release of ozone-depleting substances.

The federal department says Acklands-Grainger was found to have been selling aerosol products containing hydrochlorofluorocarbons or HCFCs, a prohibited substance linked to thinning of the earth’s ozone layer which absorbs most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.
It says its investigation determined that between 2012 and 2014 the company was selling two products which contained the prohibited HCFC-225.
The fine is to be paid into the Environmental Damages Fund and used for environmental protection projects.
According to its website, Acklands-Grainger is based in Richmond Hill, Ont., and is owned by Chicago-based Grainger.
