The Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre will be holding its fourth annual Lyrics and Latkes sing-along on Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Segal Centre, just in time for Hanukkah.

Dan Goldstein and his daughter, Eliane, from the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre Singers joined Laura Casella on Global News Morning to talk about the importance of the younger generation learning to speak Yiddish, a dialect of German with words derived from Hebrew and Aramaic used by Ashkenazi Jews.
“Ultra Orthodox communities still continue to live in Yiddish and to a certain extent, that keeps the language alive,” Goldstein said.
“There is one secular school in Montreal, but they only teach an hour week. In a way, participating in the sing-along with my daughter, teaching her the music, is a way of preserving the culture.”
The Lyrics and Latkes Sing-Along will be transliterated for anyone who doesn’t speak Yiddish.
