Fisherman’s union leader Christian Brun’s death mourned by N.B. MP Dominic LeBlanc

A New Brunswick MP is paying tribute to a leading fishermen’s advocate who was killed Monday in a car accident.

Dominic LeBlanc, the federal fisheries minister, said in a statement that he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the death of Christian Brun of the Maritime Fishermen’s Union.

LeBlanc says he was friends with the long-time union leader for years, saying Brun “worked hard to defend coastal communities in Atlantic Canada.”

Brun, who was from Cormier Village, was killed when his car collided with another vehicle on Route 11 in Lower Newcastle, N.B.

A man in the other car was also killed, while a female passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters says Brun has been with the union since 2004.
