Drivers were asked to avoid Highway 2 between Airdrie and Olds Sunday morning, as heavy snowfall has caused treacherous conditions and several collisions.
Airdrie RCMP said they were responding to several crashes on the QEII north of Airdrie. Police said there was heavy snowfall in Airdrie and the surrounding areas, which lead to low visibility and slippery roads.
Police said several emergency vehicles and tow trucks were also on the highway dealing with the collisions, and asked drivers to be aware of their presence.
“We all want to get home at the end of the day. Please drive safely,” the news release said.
Mounties said if travel was absolutely necessary, drivers should ensure their headlights are on, leave sufficient space between vehicles, slow down and exercise extreme caution.
Calgary police were also busy responding to crashes throughout the day.
As if the snow isn’t bad enough – frigid temperatures are in the forecast.
Drivers headed out next week are advised make sure their vehicle is cold weather ready, as temperatures are set to plummet into the minus 20 to 30 degree range as an Arctic air mass settles in over the Prairies.
