Carvel Clayton court appearance set for Friday

For the second time since being charged with murder last month, Carvel Clayton, 21, is scheduled to appear before a Halifax Provincial Court judge.

On Nov. 14, when Clayton was arraigned on charges of second degree murder, absolute chaos broke out in the courthouse.

The incident saw several people rush towards Clayton as he was being led from the courtroom. In the commotion, a sheriff’s deputy was knocked to the ground and struck his head.

Clayton is accused of fatally shooting Shakur Jefferies on the evening of Nov. 12.

The 21-year-old’s body was discovered between two apartment buildings on Washmill Lake Drive in Clayton Park.

Jefferies’ family and friends told Global News that he had a smile that could light up a room and described him as charismatic and an amazing father to his young child.

At this time, it’s believed Clayton will remain in the Burnside Correctional Facility and appear via video link for his scheduled appearance.

The purpose of Friday’s court appearance is to set dates for a preliminary hearing, which will determine if there is enough evidence for the case against Clayton to proceed to trial.
